Web Page Optimization
Here you will learn how to optimize your web pages properly so that the search engines can spider your website and your visitors can find you. The good news is that you have a great deal of your optimization already done. If you followed the instructions about adding your keywords two to three percent of the time to your content, you are already more than half way there.
The search engines look for different things when they spider a web site. The most important thing to understand is what the search engines primary goal is when it spiders a web site. The search engine spider is searching for how relevant a web site is and what it looks at is the title, keywords, the keywords in the content, the description, header, lead-in, and the URL name of the web site. Here you will learn how to do the above so that the search engine spider will index you. If you do this right, you will get indexed on most search engines within a matter of a few weeks. Some will index you sooner.
I will walk you through this. Follow the steps here exactly and you will not only get indexed, you should also get a decent ranking as well. There’s one thing that you should know. Most search engines won’t rank you all that high in the beginning, even if you deserve to be. Because your site is new the search engine will determine that your site hasn’t earned a ranking yet. Do this right and you will see your listing begin to climb up on the index listing in a month or so.
The domain name that you chose earlier should match your business theme. Actually it should match all optimization methods. The main URL to this site is http://the-truth-about-internet-marketing.com Look up on the address bar and you will see that this is the main domain address of this web site. Go look at the lead-in that I used on the main page for this site. You will see that it says The-Truth-About-Internet-Marketing. Notice how I used hyphens between each word. I did this consciously because the URL uses hyphens and I wanted the lead-in to match my domain name. I also used The-Truth-About-Internet-Marketing as a keyword phrase, and in my description. Don’t worry, I’ll show you how to do the keywords and write the description in a minute. If you look at the top of your browser you will see The-Truth-About-Internet-Marketing again. I made sure that this phrase was used throughout the optimization process. By doing this, the search engines can spider my site, and more importantly, so that my visitors can find me. You will learn how to do the same with your web pages as well. If you are going to put your web pages in a folder other than the document root of your domain, the folder should have a name that is relevant to your business theme. For example, for this site I would want to name the folder, the-truth-about-internet-marketing. Since the name of my domain is already named that I felt it would be better to put my web pages right in the document root. The choice is yours. Just make sure that it is relevant to your business theme.
Open the first web page that you either created yourself or the pre-made template that you are using. You should still have this on your computer and not have published it to the web yet. If you already have published it, you will need to do it again after you have finished optimizing your web pages. Right mouse click anywhere on your web page and select view source. The source of your web page will open in an editor. Toward the top of the source page you will see on the next line it should look like this <title> and </title>. The title will appear at the top of your web browser and the title will be placed between the tags. Your title should match the theme of your online business as closely as possible. Here’s what the title tag should look like in your page source.
Note: The title tag should be the first tag. A lot of web pages have this tag placed after the keywords and description tags. This is not correct but it is a common mistake that many webmasters make. If the title tag is not the tag before the description and keywords cut and paste it so that it is.
The description Meta tag is a brief description that best describes your online business and will display on the search engines when a user runs a search. Depending on the length of the description will determine whether the whole description will display or not. Write a brief description that best describes your online business. Be as specific as possible. The better you describe your online business the more targeted your visitors will be and the better your conversion rate will be. Remember to add your most relevant keywords and keyword phrases to the description. You don’t have to use them all if you have a lot of them but do use the most important ones when writing your description. Only you can determine which ones are the most relevant to your theme. You will find the description Meta tag near the title tag. It will look like this. You will place your description between the notations. Below is a partial description of this site.
The above is a small sample of what the description of this site looks like. There is more but I’m sure that you get the idea. Notice that I used the lead-in and title tag right in the description. By adding the lead-in and title tag (both should be the same) will give me a better chance of people searching for Internet Marketing of finding me. You need to do the same. Add the most relevant keywords as well. The most relevant keywords are the keywords or keyword phrases that most accurately describe your online business. Take your time with this and give it some real thought. The more accurate your description is the better.
Next will be your keywords. Place the keywords and keyword phrases that you selected earlier into the keyword meta tag section of your page source. The keyword Meta tag will look like this. Place a comma after each keyword, or keyword phrase. You will find the keyword Meta tag below the description Meta tag. Here is an example of what the keyword Meta tag should look like on your page source.
Above are just a few of the keywords that I used for this site. You will probably have more than that. The more keywords, and keyword phrases, that you use the better. There is no limit of how many keywords that you can use. Just make sure that they are relevant to your business. Your keywords must be placed between the notations. (”) The last keyword should not have a comma after it.
Once you have entered all of your keywords, your web page will be optimized. Repeat the above for all of your web pages.
Here are a couple of results of my optimization efforts. Take note of the number of results for each. If I can get on the first page of Google with these you should be able to with less competitive keyword phrases.
